Guitarist Choice award for new Washburn Parallaxe

"...we hope you'll join us in welcoming Washburn back to the metal fold...where it belongs!"

Guit parallaxe 560

Utilising 130 years of guitar building experience, Washburn have created their most advanced rock and metal guitars yet. The Washburn Parallaxe series of electric guitars include, as standard, the most player-requested features in a guitar, forgoing the need for any after-market modifications.  Guitarist magazine this month take a look at two Washburn Parallaxe models, the PXM20EFTBM and the PXS20FRTBB which receives the magazine's 'Guitarist Choice' award.

"...both have necks we love...the Parallaxe's massive frets and wide cutaway makes bespoke metal shredding up the dusty end a doddle, aided by the unique heel design.

"Either of these Parallaxe models would suit any hard rock player down to the ground...Washburn goes back to its rock and metal roots with gusto".

The full review can be found in the latest issue of Guitarist magazine (November, Issue 374) on sale now.  The Washburn Parallaxe range will be available in the UK from November.  The Washburn Parallaxe PXS20FRTBB and Washburn Parallaxe PXM20EFTBM are priced at £829 and £779 RRP inc VAT respectively.

Brooke Weston Academy upgrade with JBL, Crown, Soundcraft and dbx Upstage Theatre Supplies’ JBL/Soundcraft upgrade in 540-seat auditorium

Harman JBL CBT loudspeakers and Soundcraft Si expression console installed by  Upstage Theatre Supplies in 540 seat auditorium

Established in 1991 as an innovative state funded City Technology College, Brooke Weston Academy in Corby has a high reputation for academic achievement.  Built on land donated by local land owner Hugh de Capell Brooke, and supported by Garry Weston, owner of Associated British Foods, in 2008 the school became an Academy. Although 22 years is relatively short in the life of a building, it is light years in the evolution of sound technology.  And so school principal, Trish Stringer, recently ordered that the sound system in their flagship 540-seat purpose-built Weston Theatre be upgraded to improve coverage.

BrookeWeston 1

AV & Theatre Technician, Peter Jackson, who has been at the school since 1993, certainly had no objection, and became part of the tender process which resulted in Leicester-based Upstage Theatre Supplies being awarded the contract.

Set up 14 years ago by David Brooks, Upstage specified an integrated Harman Professional solution, supported by Sound Technology, UK & Eire distributors of the brand portfolio.

With raked, retractable seating to allow for a reconfigurable flat floor, and the requirement to partition off the front areas for smaller groups in more intimate learning environments, Upstage was alerted to JBL’s versatile CBT70J-1 Constant Beamwidth Technology™ loudspeaker. This represents a breakthrough in pattern control consistency, utilising complex analogue delay beam-forming and amplitude tapering to accomplish superior, consistent vertical coverage.

One pair down each side operate as stand-alone full range speakers while another pair — wall mounted at the bottom of the raked seating — is combined with CBT70JE-1’s; these double length columns provide additional bass response, extended pattern control, and increased sound output levels.

Further down — in front of the stage is a large 12ft x 9ft retractable video screen — are two of the smaller wall-mounted CBT50LA-1 columns, which tend to be used for soundtrack reproduction at film showings. A floor-mounted PRX618X-XLF powered subwoofer can also be switched in and out at will. Four scene sets are stored in a dbx 1261M 12x6 Zone Processor (with ZC8 rotary zone controller).

Via the presets the Academy can activate various soundscapes for everything from morning assembly to stage presentations, and third party gatherings ranging from the Women's Institute meetings to conferences.

Crown XTi 4002, 2002 and 1002 amplifiers power the system and handle the processing internally, while up in the control room, a Soundcraft Si Expression 2 24-input mixing desk, with Mini Stage Box 32 (providing 32 analogue inputs and 8 analogue line outputs with four pairs of AES outputs) has replaced the former analogue desk.

Peter Jackson says this solution meets all criteria for flexibility from a discreet column system functioning as a vertical line array — which is far more elegant than the previous highly visible black boxes — and praised Sound Technology’s Danny Kyte, for the wisdom of his product selection and subsequent proof of concept, which immediately convinced the school.

This was confirmed by Jackson himself. “I was requested to update a system that had become tired after 20 years — and the look and the style were almost as important as the sound quality and flexibility. Upstage proposed the JBL solution and Sound Technology gave a fantastic onsite demonstration.

“The old system wouldn't provide even coverage into all four corners — and at the back of the stage you couldn't hear. Aside from improving the coverage pattern we also needed to ensure that our handheld radio mics would work without feedback when used in front of the speakers — and we now have 99% feedback rejection.

“As for the Soundcraft console, we have a 32 channel analogue desk as part of a fully-equipped music department but this was our chance to bring digital into the building.”

Nevertheless David Brooks’ team only had a four-week installation window since the school operates a five-term policy, and the new Autumn term was looming. But the fit-out couldn’t have gone more smoothly, he said.

If the installation had been 100% straightforward, then the operation and set-up times for the respective performances matches this. While the old mixing desk has been repurposed, the new Si Expression 2 will accommodate all their mic inputs and handle monitor mixes at the stage with a total capacity of 66 channels (via the expansion cards).

“What’s really cool is the iPad [Soundcraft’s ViSi Remote which allows wireless remote control of the desk from an iPad] as we can operate mics while in rehearsal and can control from the auditorium. We can also bring the desk into the auditorium because the mixer is on Cat 5 and we have two 16/4 analogue snakes.”

BrookeWeston 2

The dbx Zone Controller enables the school to access the four different scene sets — which had been part of the original brief.

“Whichever set up we use I have a mixer set-up ready to go. Whether we are staging a musical showcase, or playing out from line devices such as DVD, TV, CD or computer the clarity and quality of the sound is superb — as has been the after-sales service from Sound Technology,” says Peter Jackson.

The system was commissioned by Ben Todd, Head of Sound Technology’s Project Team, and the result is a slick, intuitive system installation that will see Brooke Weston well into the future.

Legendary Engineer and Producer Bruce Botnick Outfits His Studio with Three of HARMAN’s JBL Professional M2 Master Reference Monitors

To anyone in the pro audio industry, it’s not much of a secret that Bruce Botnick is one of the industry’s most accomplished engineers and producers. He secured his reputation in the 1960s as the producer of the Doors’ classic LA Woman album, engineer of the first two Love albums and co-producer of the band’s masterpiece, Forever Changes. Botnick has worked on records by the Rolling Stones, Eddie Money and many others and as an engineer for film composer Jerry Goldsmith on more than 100 movie soundtracks. Recently, Botnick purchased three JBL M2 Master Reference Monitors for use as Left/Center/Right loudspeakers in his studio. The M2 is a 2-way large-format loudspeaker designed to set new standards for sonic accuracy and dynamic range in professional monitoring environments.

NewImage

Botnick has always kept an eye on recording technology advancements and first encountered the M2 at the 2012 AES Convention, when it was still in the development stage. “I heard these loudspeakers in a less-than-ideal environment and they still sounded amazing,” said Botnick, who then told JBL’s Peter Chaikin he’d like to try them and judge them in his studio as soon as they were in production. In early 2013, Botnick visited the JBL Professional headquarters in Northridge for a second listen and found the sound exceptional. “At that point I made the decision to simply go ahead and buy them without ever having mixed on them in my studio,” he said. After the M2’s arrived, Botnick immediately began a project to mix the score for the historical drama Parkland. In preparation, his newly installed L,C,R M2 system was tuned by the Dolby staff, accessing the filters in the BSS Soundweb London BLU800 processor which in Botnick’s system, serves as the M2 crossovers and also the system’s room EQ. All parameters in the Soundweb London can be accessed from a laptop using HARMAN London Architect™ software. The M2’s system tune-ability ensures an extremely accurate tonal balance in a broad range of mix environments.

“I loved mixing on the M2 system right off the bat,” Botnick added. “I was able to mix for many hours and not get ear fatigue. The sonic images that came out of the M2 were really big, so when we subsequently went into the main dubbing theater at post-production facility Todd AO in Hollywood and put the music up, it translated incredibly well.” The correlation between the sound heard in Botnick’s studio and the Todd AO sound stage meant he could trust his mixes more than ever before in going from the studio to the cinema.

Another advantage Botnick finds is that he doesn’t have to restrict himself to listening in a narrow sweet spot, thanks to the excellent off-axis response made possible by a new Image Control Waveguide, designed specifically for the M2. The Image Control Waveguide provides a seamless transition between the M2’s newly developed D2 high-frequency driver and the woofer and delivers an accurate tonal balance and superlative imaging and detail to a broad area of the listening room. “I can turn sideways to work on something and still hear the balance. It’s not ‘pointy’ and the speakers don’t buzz on the high end,” Botnick noted.

Botnick can play the M2 at a relatively loud level and still be confident of hearing accurate reproduction. “Film music mixing should be done at an 85dB level and I’m very strict about that,” he said. “The image size of the M2 is just breathtaking, and you don’t’ feel like your hearing the speakers as separate entities in the room—you get the sense that you’re hearing everything in the correct proportions behind the screen as you would in the cinema.”

“The M2 speaks to you effortlessly,” Botnick added. “It’s a much easier loudspeaker to listen to than most and I can get a good balance almost instantly. If it doesn’t sound good on the M2, it doesn’t sound good, period—for me a great speaker also lets me hear if something isn’t working.”

In mixing Parkland, Botnick went into the final mix with 10 5.1 surround sound stems. “Even with 10 stems totaling 60 tracks, the M2 let me hear into the mix, perfectly layered on top of one another no matter how complex the mix became. Hearing that deeply into the score enabled me to tailor all the reverbs and ambient sounds so they translated really well and created the perfect sonic environment for every scene.” Parkland had its theatrical release this month.

Botnick recognizes the engineering effort that went into the JBL M2. “I appreciate the fact that the people who worked on the M2 actually listen to music and know what it’s supposed to sound like, and can trust their ears and not just a measurement graph. They know how a good mix should sound.”

SSL launches new improved Matrix2 console at AES NY 2013

New version adds powerful new features to unique hybrid production console

Solid State Logic, the world’s leading manufacturer of creative tools for audio professionals, launches Matrix2 at the 2013 AES convention in NYC (Booth #2821). Since its 2008 launch the SSL Matrix console has established a high profile clientele who value its unique capabilities as a genuinely hybrid production platform. Its combination of SSL analogue summing, streamlined integration of boutique analogue outboard mic pre’s & processing (via its software controlled analogue patch system) and advanced DAW control surface, provides production power and flexibility like no other console. This new version of the Matrix takes feedback from customers and provides a collection of powerful new features.

SSL Matrix2

Photo above: SSL Matrix2 (click for hi-res version)

One of the unique and much praised features of Matrix has always been the integrated software controlled patching of analogue channel inserts and this has been significantly upgraded in Matrix2. Hardware device inserts can now be loaded directly from the console hardware controls (previously this was done only via the remote browser software) with an intuitive new interface that facilitates loading individual processors, A/B comparison of different processors and building processor chains. The Matrix remote browser software has also been re-designed to provide a new ‘drag and drop’ style interface for loading processors and building chains. A powerful ‘Fader Linking’ system has been added to the console which allows two or more faders to be grouped, to facilitate stereo or 5.1 channel control or subgroup style mixing. The A-FADA (Analogue Fader Accesses DAW Automation) summing system used in Duality, AWS and the new SSL Sigma rack has been introduced to enable the analogue faders of Matrix2 to be driven by automation data from your DAW. A-FADA enables channel automation to be performed entirely in the analogue signal path but with the advantages of DAW automation data editing. The addition of A-FADA to Matrix2 facilitates project portability between different SSL products. The previously optional 5.1 output card will now be included as standard pre-fitted in all units.

A collection of smaller new features have also been added including; ‘partial TR setup save & import’ which allows selected parts of the console setup to be saved and imported as setup templates, new Preset insert matrix ‘scenes’, Preset insert naming tools, “automatic dB readout” for Pro Tools users (allowing the scribble strip to automatically display fader values upon touch), modifier key ‘press and hold’ functionality for Cubase/Nuendo users and new DAW templates for Presonus Studio One and Ableton Live!

Matrix2 will ship in Dec 2013 priced at £14,749 + VAT.
All of these new features (excluding the 5.1 output card) will be available to existing customers as a free upgrade.

JBL AWC in Worcester Warriors stadium sound upgrade

ETA Sound boosts coverage and clarity for South stand hospitality guests

Crowds and corporate guests watching Worcester Warriors’ rugby matches in the South stand at the club’s 12,000 capacity Sixways Stadium, will now be able to hear match-day announcements with much greater clarity and definition.

Warriors1358

Photo above: Worcester Warriors rugby stadium equipped with JBL All Weather Compact loudspeakers (click for hi-res version)

This is thanks to a cleverly designed sound reinforcement upgrade carried out by Eddie Thomas of ETA Sound, and featuring JBL’s new AWC129 (All Weather Compact) 2-way coaxial loudspeakers — providing 90° x 90° on the lower stand — and AWC 82’s above in the hospitality area, offering an even wider dispersion of 120° x 120°. These were supplied by Harman Professional’s UK and Eire distributors, Sound Technology Ltd.

The enquiry was placed with ETA Sound parent company, SSE Audio Group, which is based nearby. Recalls Thomas, “We were invited to a site meeting to look initially at a solution for the South Stand, which supports 34 hospitality boxes, but this will eventually be rolled out across the entire stadium.”

The outgoing system, he said, had served the club for many years but the technology was now outdated and ready for upgrade.

Working with the Head of Operations at Sixways Stadium, Eddie Thomas was aware that he would be working to budget constraints, and that the client had already consulted with other manufacturers. But having seen the new AWC’s on the Harman Professional stand at last year’s PLASA Show in London he knew this series had all the attributes to meet the criteria.

“We were looking for an all-weather speaker that would meet budget requirements and these were strongly recommended based on performance, price and dispersion pattern.”

The installer emphasised that the angles were critical because in view of the low roof and steep rake, the loudspeakers in the bottom stand would be in close proximity to the spectators. ETA Sound therefore undertook a predictive model before recommending nine of the AWC 129’s — spaced equidistant from the steel metalwork on the underside of the roof.

Higher up in the tribunes there are two further levels of hospitality. Unlike the AWC 129’s, which have a 12in LF driver, the smaller AWC82 contains an 8in bass driver — but with a 120° x 120° dispersion pattern delivers wider coverage across the two levels.

Feeds into the system include match-day mic announcements and music playback from the DJ booth.

The new installation is connected into the existing fire alarm system and all elements of the new installation meet voice intelligibility and coverage requirements, and at the same time conform to BS5839 fire alarm safety standards.

Warriors1359

Photo above: Worcester Warriors rugby stadium equipped with JBL All Weather Compact loudspeakers (click for hi-res version)

Added Brian Ryan, Sixways Stadium’s Head of Operations, “We were very impressed with the new JBL speakers and they have performed well during their first ‘live’ match. The clarity for speech announcements is excellent and they also handle music exceptionally well. “We were looking for a system that would also comply with our legislative requirements for evacuation purposes, which this system has accomplished, and within a strict budget.”

“It is the first time we have used these loudspeakers and we are delighted with their performance,” said Eddie Thomas.
